A guide from start to finish – Building a blog with your domain and WordPress
It came to my attention that many people use what I call dependent blogs because they do not know how to do anything else. Dependent blogs are those that are usually free, depend on a third party such as Google and you don’t own the domain name. This came about after a question from a friend who is an excellent writer, and wanted to know how to promote her blog. The first thing that came to my mind was, she is using Blogspot. She does not “own” a real top level domain name.
Building a blog with your own domain name is merely a first step towards promotion. I could not answer how to effectively promote any website in 25 words or less. The seed was planted; I decided to grow it.
Everything I plan to explain here is somewhere on the Internet, probably many times over. What I’ve learned is, many people don’t have time to research and put together all the little bits of information to get this done. Think of this as an absolute beginners course, where I put it all in one place.
The key, the emphasis on this entire series is beginner. Every aspect of what your learn here goes much deeper. What I want to do is get you up and running as quickly as possible. Initial implementation is fairly straightforward. Other topics such as SEO, are not so simple. You can learn a few basic concepts here, but volumes have been written on SEO alone. I’ll show you where to find more information should you have an interest. I developed websites for a number of years, and I know how the system works. Questions are always welcome and if I do this correctly I expect them.
Here is a summery of what will be available in the coming weeks.
1. Where to start – the importance of owning a domain name.
2. How to register a domain, explanation of how this works. Do it.
3. Hosting. The how, why and where to get your blog hosted and online.
4. Implementation. How to set up a system using WordPress. Why use WordPress?
5. You are up and running, where to go from here. Tips, bits and pieces of using WordPress and your host company.
6. Finally, how to promote using social networking, word of mouth and other means.
I will try my best to have each of these installments online every Tuesday morning. Should hell freeze over and the creeks run dry, I’ll be the first to inform you I might be late with one.
Any questions or feedback, comments or suggestions, please let me know.
Go ahead! Get started with the first part…

Hal,
I think people will love you for this series. You provide simple-to-understand explanations and remove the trepidation a beginner may have about the technical side of getting started. I get a clear sense of your mastery of this process from your writing as well as the construction of your own blog. My hope is that you have no delay delivering each installment to your clamoring audience! On to Part One…
Thanks Mari. My plan is to post a new part every Monday, Tuesday at the latest. In fact, I'm looking ahead to offering this in an ebook or PDF format after it is finished. Another thought, if enough people are interested, I could start a discussion forum, or email discussion group enabling members to help each other. First things first – Let's see how this goes.
Hi,
That's a cool idea and I can bet that novice bloggers would love it. I have bookmarked you site and would surely come again to the next part of the series. I would like to advice that please include one more point in this list “how to get ideas for the post” because really it's very difficult to find ideas for a novice blogger.

Sounds like this will be very useful for a lot of people. I look forward to the coming posts. Also might make a great eBook.
Here's one of my own using Me.com and iWeb (Mac Only). http://randymurrayonline.com/2009/08/20/priorit...

Love the ebook idea Randy mentions. Thank you so much! This will be my one stop shopping for a better blog now! Plus I will promote the heck out of it – so many people could use this help, I'm sure!
Hal, Tweetmeme is down, so I'll retweet this the long way. I'm not sure if it will appear in the list of reactions below.
Looking forward to reading each installment. You have a great writing style which will make this easy to follow.
Thanks!
