6 Steps to A Better Blog – Web Hosting

February 15, 2010 · 12 comments

In the previous part of this series you learned how to register a domain name. You must have that completed before you can continue with this section.

What to expect in part three:

  • Points to follow when selecting a web host
  • How hosting works – the types of hosting
  • Recommendations – Static vs shared IP
  • Recommended Companies
  • Summation of what is required to host a database driven blog

Another recommendation is to do each of these steps as you go through this series. There is a method to all this; in some cases you can’t proceed to the next step until you have finished previous step. For example, you cannot host a site until you have registered a domain name. In the lesson that follows this one, you cannot work with the site if you have not implemented it.

As always, comments, questions and expert opinion is always welcome.

So I need to complete my homework from last week NOW. I told you the name I want is taken, right? I have some other ideas – I don't want to go too far afield of gifts2love though – which is the holdup. I've been debating. Plus I just read you should buy your name as a domain – I'm going to do that too. I'll be back as soon as I've got them – maybe today.

When I first saw your domain name, gifts2love, the first thing that came to mind was, this site is about selling some sort of gift. It sounds more entrepreneurial than what I know it to be.
If by 'buy your name' you mean your personal name, that would only benefit if your name is pretty much the same as what you want to brand, or your name is somehow connected with your service or product.

I read that you should do it, if ever in the future you create a website for you. Does that make sense? Like if I decide someday to move to something grander than this blog site, something more expansive, then I should have my name purchased for that. Kind of like Seth's site that we both follow, I think?

It costs little to register a domain and park it. If you think you may use it in the future, absolutely go for it.
About Seth Godin – His brand is his name. Or vice versa. He has published 12 + books (I think) and may be the best known marketing expert on the net. Unless your name is among the A-Listers, or you see yourself there at some point in time, it won't sell the product.
Consider that you are looking for (or stumble across) something that interests you. When you search for a product or service how do you associate it? If you wrote a book would you name it after yourself? Just thinking.

I do my hosting with Crovean, owned by a guy in Nashville TN. We met on Twitter last Summer when I just happened to be complaining about the host I was with then. Crovean has been absolutely fantastic. I host two sites with them for $2.50 apiece each month and have huge accounts that are full of goodies. :) I'm very happy there.

Exactly. That's why most writers have their name as their domain name – it makes us easy to find.

Hi Mari,
Happy with your host is what matters. As you know, you still have to register the domain, and that is very inexpensive anymore. I have several registered that I may never use.
I hope seasoned bloggers like you will jump in and make comments like this. Other opinions and options matter.

I keep mine registered with GoDaddy and have been able to Google for coupon codes at renewal time. I end up paying around $5 per domain each September.

So do I, and in the previous section of this series – http://www.weblogredux.com/6-steps-to-better-bl... – I recommend GoDaddy as a Registrar.

So let me see if I can get this straight – domain name is first (check), web hosting is second (and this is where I'm pretty confused) and third is setting it up at Wordpress (which is what I'm ready to jump right to).

So you advise – GoDaddy = domain
Hostgator or Doreo = hosting
Wordpress = site?

Just trying to understand this hosting step.

In a word, yes. In order:
A domain name – Under ordinary circumstances you can't buy hosting space without one
Hosting space – So you can upload (build) your site / blog
Build the site in your space – In this case install Wordpress
